Visit of the Castle of Abbadia

Born in Dublin in 1810 to an Irish mother and a Basque (or more precisely Souletin) father, Antoine d’Abbadie was an ardent defender of his language and culture.

In 1836, he published with Augustin Chaho Grammatical Studies on the Basque Language, before creating, a few years later, in Urrugne, the Basque festivals. His commitment to the Basque people was such that, at his death, he was given the name of “Euskaldunen Aïta”.
